ADHD reward system: how to set one up

By the Tika team · July 14, 2026

A well-designed reward system works with the ADHD brain, which is highly sensitive to immediate reward. The goal: make effort visible and rewarding, without punishment or haggling.

Clear, immediate points

Each task is worth a set number of points known in advance. The moment it’s done, the points land: this instant link between action and reward is the key. A visible piggy bank gives a concrete goal.

Rewards that actually matter

Favour relational or experience rewards over material ones: game time together, choosing the evening film, an outing. Set a sensible points cost and let the child aim for it.

Never take points away as punishment

Removing points turns the tool into a threat and breaks trust. Reward what’s achieved; what isn’t done simply earns zero. Progress should always move upward.
