Screens and ADHD: finding the right balance
By the Tika team · July 14, 2026
Screens offer immediate, constant reward — exactly what the ADHD brain seeks. Hence the intense pull and the painful endings. The goal isn’t to ban, but to frame.
A clear, visible frame
Announce the duration in advance and make it visible with a timer. A stable, predictable rule avoids constant negotiation.
Anticipate the end
An abrupt cut-off triggers meltdowns. Give a few minutes’ warning, and always plan the next activity to ease the transition.
- Set a clear amount of time
- Use a visual timer
- Warn 5 minutes before the end
- Plan the next activity
Make screen time a reward, not a given
Building screen time into the reward system (points traded for time) makes it motivating and framed, rather than endured or grabbed.
