Homework without conflict with a child who has ADHD

By the Tika team · July 14, 2026

Homework is one of the main battlegrounds. After a school day of holding it together, a child with ADHD arrives tired, and homework taxes the very executive functions that are hardest. A good structure beats willpower.

A short, predictable frame

Set a regular, short slot with breaks. Fifteen effective minutes beat forty-five minutes of struggle. The child knows when it starts and ends: predictability defuses anxiety.

Break it down and make it concrete

Split into micro-steps and make them visible. One thing at a time, a movement break in between, then check together.

Protect the relationship

You’re a coach, not a second teacher. Encourage effort over results and avoid power struggles: the relationship matters more than a perfect exercise.
